Queen Street Upgrade Set to Commence - 3 February, 2010
Phase Two of the Queen Street upgrade, between Kent Street and Duchess Street, will take place during February and March 2010.
This will see an upgrade to the existing storm water management system, new footpaths, and indented parking bays. The Queen Street median strip will be widened to allow for further lighting and communication upgrades and the installation of fibre optics. The retaining wall around the round-about on Kent and Queen Street will also be demolished and replaced with an attractive brick-paved inlay.
After consultation with local business operators, the upgrade has been scheduled to commence on February 7. Early commencement will ensure completion prior to the busy Easter holidays. It will ensure that the work program is not extended unnecessarily due to winter rains.
Spokesperson for the Shire, Jenny May said: "Night time operations had been considered, but due to the elevated costs associated with this, most of the upgrade will be carried out during the day. Some road closures will apply. However, the Shire will ensure access to all businesses in the vicinity during operating hours and will endeavour to minimise disruption to members of the public and business operators."
The Shire asks for cooperation and patience from members of the public and business operators during this exciting work program.
"The townscape upgrade marks an important milestone for our town and in the long run it will be of immense benefit to us all," said Ms May.
