State's Offer Accepted, Federal Government's Awaited (3rd October, 2007)

  • Media release

Council at its meeting on Wednesday night (26th September) resolved to accept the State's offer to fund its portion of the Busselton Jetty rebuild and through negotiation secure the best long term outcome for the community.

Shire President, Bev Clarke said that "Council's decision is a long term decision that might not be popular with some in the short term but will be seen as a turning point in the future."

"This is a very exciting time for the community and a significant step in growing a sustainable region by balancing economic, environmental and social values such a large scale project demands."

The Busselton Jetty is the 4th highest visited tourist attraction in the State and when rebuilt is estimated to contribute $10 Million to the local economy annually.

"Ensuring the long term sustainability of the Jetty was a key reason staff recommended the offer from the State Government be accepted" Cr Clarke said.

The Shire has been seeking a 1/3 contribution from the Federal Government for the past 12 months and is hoping this might be announced prior to an election being called.

"The Shire has had many discussions with the Federal Government about rebuilding the jetty and various Ministers and senior officials have all expressed a high level of interest in seeing it successfully completed. It is disappointing that we still have no firm indication from the Federal Government as to whether they will ultimately back this important project for the South-West or not" Cr Clarke said.

"While Council has accepted the State's offer it has also noted that that acceptance is underpinned by certain values and matters that are to be negotiated in an arrangement with the State to achieve the best outcome for the Shire, community and the region," Cr. Clarke said.

The community will be extensively involved in the detail planning and design for what occurs at the foreshore to ensure the character and culture of Busselton is reflected in the new development.

Council also formally noted at Wednesday's meeting the opinions expressed by the community members at the recent Special Meeting of Electors.
