Political Leaders Invited to Inspect Busselton Jetty (6th November, 2007)
The leaders of Australia's two major political parties have been invited by the City of Busselton to inspect the condition of the Busselton Jetty as part of their Federal election campaigns.
The Prime Minister, Hon. John Howard MP and the Leader of the Opposition, Kevin Rudd MP, have been offered a briefing on the future of the jetty and the importance of Federal funding for its reconstruction during their visits to Western Australia.
The Prime Minister has acknowledged the invitation, but has not committed to a visit, whilst a response is still awaited from the Leader of the Opposition.
Shire President, Cr Wes Hartley said both leaders were visiting Western Australia during their election campaigns and the invitation provided a great opportunity for them to focus on an issue of importance to the voters in the seat of Forrest and the South West in particular.
"A Federal contribution is a key element to the future sustainability of Busselton Jetty so it is important both parties understand they may have a role in contributing to the saving of this important iconic structure", said Cr Hartley.
An application by the Shire for Federal funding under its regional development scheme was being processed at the time the Federal election was announced. Given the caretaker protocol of the current Government, the application is not able to be further advanced until a new government has been appointed.
Cr Hartley said the Shire's ideal situation would be for both the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition to commit a new Federal Government to backing the Jetty Rebuild Project.
END.
