Shire Welcomes Federal Commitment to Jetty (7 November 2007)
Shire President, Cr Wes Hartley, has thanked the Federal Government on behalf of the people of Busselton for their commitment of $6 million towards the Busselton Jetty Rebuild, if re-elected.
"The commitment of the Federal Government towards this project is something the Council, Shire staff and other stakeholders have been working towards for the past twelve months", Cr Hartley said.
The rebuilding of the Jetty is a high priority for Council, which has also committed $6 million towards the estimated $18 million project.
When rebuilt, the Jetty is estimated to contribute at least $10 million annually to the local Busselton economy.
"This announcement by the Minister on behalf of the Federal Government, has been made possible by the work of many local community people including Shire representatives, the Liberal candidate for the Federal seat of Forrest, Ms Nola Marino and the Member for Vasse, Mr Troy Buswell, MLA, and for which we are very grateful", Cr Hartley said.
Cr Hartley reiterated that the ideal situation would be for the Federal Opposition to also commit to the rebuild, so that the people of Busselton are guaranteed of the Federal Government commitment to this iconic project, regardless who forms the next government.
The commitment of the Federal Coalition, towards the project, if re-elected, is a key element of the funding model for the rebuild.
Council is receiving a briefing on Monday 12th November about the project from the State Government and its offer. Today's Federal Government announcement will clearly influence the nature of that discussion.
