10,000 Steps Western Seaboard Challenge Official Launch (13 May 2008)

  • Media release

This Thursday 15th May 2008 will see Shire of Busselton staff embark on their biggest challenge to date as they put on their walking shoes and hit the pavement!

Research conducted by the Shire shows walking for recreation, exercise and transport is the most popular form of physical activity across all age groups and demographics.

The "Get Active Geographe - Physical Activity Plan" (G.A.G) is being designed to increase Physical Activity opportunities for all people within the Shire of Busselton. The '10,000 Steps Western Seaboard Challenge' is an important component of G.A.G.

The '10,000 Steps Western Seaboard Challenge' involves four teams from the Shire in a virtual walking challenge from Perth to Broome. Teams of eleven will wear a pedometer for 4 weeks to measure their level of physical activity (number of steps). Prizes will be awarded along the way and members will also receive virtual postcards as they clock up steps walking to towns along the way.

Shire of Busselton's Manager for Community Development Allan Whitfield said "The 10,000 Steps Western Seaboard Challenge has been identified by the Shire as a program of merit for the organisation and the wider community. It is anticipated that this program will give a greater community profile for G.A.G as a whole, with links to the future development of a '10,000 Steps Library Loan Scheme' at both the Busselton and Dunsborough Libraries."

The '10, 000 Steps' program has been implemented successfully all around Australia across a variety of organisations including government, corporate and private workplaces, health service providers, schools and universities.

All media are invited to the official launch for an interview and photo opportunity with the four teams. Light refreshments will be served.
