Shire Recieves Promises From Government And Opposition For Busselton Jetty Rebuild And Foreshore Revitalisation (28 August 2008)

  • Media release

Shire President, Cr Wes Hartley, has welcomed responses received from both Government and Opposition towards the Busselton Jetty Rebuild and Foreshore revitalisation.

In his letter of 25th August, Hon Mark McGowan MLA, Minister for the South West, confirmed that if the Carpenter Governmernt was returned to office, the Minister's offer of 9th July would remain open.

On 26th August, Shadow Treasurer and Member for Vasse, Troy Buswell MLA, released a statement indicating that were the Barnett-led Opposition to form Government after 6th September, it would commit $24 million to the Jetty reconstruction and offset this contrbition from the development of Crown land on the foreshore.

"This means regardless of which party forms the next Government, the incoming State Government will contribute towards the Jetty Rebuild and Foreshore revitalisation, including parts of the A class reserves", Cr Hartley said.

In additon to reconstruction, the ongoing sustainability of the Jetty under the Opposition plan would be guaranteed, similar to that on offer from the present Government, with the creation of four new ground leases on the foreshore, the income from which would be directed into the maintenance reserve.

The Shire President said, "I am pleased the Shadow Treasuer has listened to our request in regard to the Foreshore leases and the importance of those for the Jetty's ongoing sustainability.  We look forward to discussing these matters should the Opposition win government".

"We are anticipating that work will be able to commence this summer, but this is largely dependent upon when the funds from the State Government would become available", Cr Hartley said.

Cr Hartley said the commitment of both Government and Opposition to the restoration of the Jetty and related redevelopments indicates there is bi-partisan agreement that doing nothing is simply not an option.
