Queen Street 'Cultural Precinct' Upgrade
During the past 12 months, the City of Busselton has undertaken a process of enhancing the visual appearance and practical performance of Queen St. This upgrade has now progressed through to the final section, the Cultural Precinct. This is the area between Adelaide St and Marine Tce that is home to some of the Shire’s important heritage buildings and key cultural activities.
The Concept Plan has its roots in, and been designed around, documents such as the Busselton Town Centre Guide Plan (2004) that made recommendations on the form and function of the precinct. However, prior to finalising the plan, the Shire is consulting with the general community and key users of the area to ensure the compatibility of the plan with those who use the space.
Subject to this consultation, the ‘Cultural Precinct’ upgrade works will include:
- Resurfacing of the road and pedestrian areas to become a shared space
- Installation of decorative street lighting and in-ground up-lighting
- New street furniture and public art works
- Retractable bollards to encourage the use of the space for events and performances
- Water sensitive urban design landscaping incorporating existing trees
- Installation of street drainage.
- Reconfiguration of the Adelaide St / Queen St intersection
The works are planned to commence in April 2011 with the first phase being the western power upgrade to street lighting and the majority of works taking place mid year.
