Port Geographe Bypass Works
SAND AND SEAGRASS BYPASSING WORKS AT PORT GEOGRAPHE
The last bypass works were again carried out following default procedures taken under the Development Deed by the City and the Department of Transport.
As the winter had not seen the same intensity of storms the amount of seagrass unnaturally accumulated on the western beach was less than it had been in previous years.
The programme of works was completed on time and slightly under budget. Approximately 60,000 cubic metres of sand was transported to Wonnerup and the beach was profiled to facilitate access and retain sufficient sand to provide an amenity and level of protection.
Shortly after completion of the works a thin layer of seagrass wrack washed back onto the western beach and the sand removed from the area has not been replenished to the extent normally experienced. There is also wrack present in the shallow area close to the shore and the signage recommended by the Department of Health has been reinstated advising against accessing areas where wrack is present.
The next bypassing operation will commence towards the latter part of this year and once the actual commencement date is known details will be published and a mail out issued to affected residents.
