Cast Iron Pillar Boxes of Western Australia
Friday 19th August 2022
(Past Event)
Cast iron pillar boxes were once a common sight on the streets of Perth and in the country towns of Western Australia.
In Western Australia, the fabrication of these pillar boxes was predominately carried out by a local firm with the name J & E Ledger clearly marked on each of the pillar boxes they made. So who were the people and the firm behind the name and when did the Ledgers start their manufacturing business in Western Australia?
Was the historic letterbox in Busselton made by this firm and what is its historical significance?
Sue Hobson will be presenting the findings of her research on cast iron pillar boxes, revealing an interesting aspect of the social and postal history of Western Australia.
