The City of Busselton’s economic development team is responsible for assisting with the development and growth of the City’s local economy, promoting tourism, supporting local businesses and encouraging new business activities.

Economic Development Strategy and Implementation Plan

On 9 November 2016, Council adopted a new Economic Development Strategy (2016-2026) and implementation plan to help guide Council and its strategic partners to facilitate local economic development. Six key focus areas include:

  • Investment Attraction and Marketing
  • Business Retention and Expansion
  • Regional Workforce Development
  • Industry Development
  • Strategic Infrastructure
  • Placemaking and Activation

Investment Attraction Strategy: Key Opportunities & Action Plan

The City of Busselton Economic Development Strategy (2016-2026) identified investment attraction and marketing as a key focus areas. It aligns with community and stakeholder feedback for a desire to foster a strong local economy that sustains existing and attracts new business, industry and employment opportunities. The Investment Attraction Strategy: Key Opportunities and Action Plan includes a thorough analysis, identifies key investment opportunities and includes a practical investment attraction strategy with action plan and key information about priority industries.

Economic Development Taskforce

Council established an Economic Development Taskforce (EDT) to steer the implementation plan and facilitate collaboration between Government, industry and community groups that have a role in local economic development.

It provides advice, recommendations and updates to Council on the implementation and review of the Strategy, with a strong focus on Investment Attraction and Marketing; Business Retention and Expansion; Regional Workforce Development; Industry Development; Strategic Infrastructure and Place Making and Activation.

Economic Development Working Group

Economic Development Working Group (EDWG) is a collaborative effort by industry, business and community leaders in actioning the priorities identified in the Implementation Plan.

The EDWG is action focused and through the use of a lead and support style structure, initiatives will be delegated to the group.

Smart City Strategy

The City of Busselton’s Smart City Strategy 2020 – 2024 will position Busselton to support a productive, accessible, liveable city that attracts talent, encourages innovation and promotes jobs and growth. This Strategy will assist Busselton in adapting to a new technology-driven economy, expand innovative thinking and support social and economic growth.

The Smart City Strategy is currently being developed and will be presented to Council early March 2021. 

Smart City & Digital Working Group

This working group has compiled a strategy in consultation with the business community and wider community. A smart city is an urban development vision to integrate information and communication technology (ICT) and Internet of Things (IoT) technology in a secure fashion to manage assets.

The sub-group provides strategic direction so the local community and businesses (across all industry sectors) can maximise the benefits from the growth of online and digital activity and other new communication infrastructure and technologies.

Busselton and Dunsborough Place Project Outcomes Report 2019

In 2019 the City convened a series of ‘placemaking’ workshops that involved community members, local business owners, Councillors, City staff and relevant stakeholders. The workshops formed the development of an Outcomes Report that the City uses to guide future actions relating to ‘place making’ for both Busselton and Dunsborough.
