About the Project

In late 2019, the City undertook community consultation for the upgrade of Mitchell Park in the City Centre. The City has used business and community feedback to develop a design that creates connection with surrounding shops and cafés, emphasises the importance of open green space and improves pedestrian access to the park.

We are excited to deliver a new parkland that includes:

  • Upgrades to street furniture, landscaping, shading and pathways
  • New raised timber viewing decks with seating
  • New planting islands
  • New shelter structures with seating node areas
  • New lighting and tree up-lights to illuminate the park for safety
  • Universal ramp access to raised decks where possible

Works commenced in May 2021 and are expected to be complete in September 2021.

Pedestrian and traffic management will be required during this time. The public is asked to follow all safety directions as required. Public access to construction areas is restricted.

Removal of Peppermint Trees

The City engaged an arborist to carry out a Tree Condition Assessment at Mitchell Park in August 2020. A further Quantified Tree Risk Assessment (QTRA) found that two peppermint trees posed a very high risk of causing harm. The removal of these trees was required due to their poor structural condition.

The trees were removed in December 2020 and some understorey pruning was also undertaken to improve visibility within the park. The remaining peppermint trees will be protected

Construction Stage 2 – Developer Works

A portion of Mitchell Park is owned by the shopping centre developer, Australian Unity Property Limited (AUPL). The City is currently in negotiations with AUPL to determine the extent of these works and timing. It is intended that these works will tie in with Stage 1 City works.
