‘Between Worlds’ Photographic Exhibition

Contemporary guarded moments are on show in the new photographic exhibition by Kirralea Birch. Ms Birch won last year’s Emerging Artist prize in the City of Busselton’s Art Award.

Opening on 27 April 2022, ‘Between Worlds’ will entice the viewer with Kirralea’s emotive self-portraits.

Kirralea Birch is a West Australian photographic artist pursuing the liminal space between reality and dreams. She has taken an interest in playing with the viewer’s sense of the familiar and strange, producing visual narratives that are eerie and alluring.

Kirralea said “I was introduced to photography as a young girl. My father, an Astronomer, taught me how to use a camera and a darkroom. I initially wanted to emulate the beauty I saw in scientific photographs, but eventually became interested in very grainy images, where the line between reality and the infinite began to blur.”

“My photographs are self-portraits - offerings of private, guarded moments. They speak of illusion, delusion, memory, time, longing, capturing moments of beauty, of sadness, of finality, of impending change. Moments where the self becomes the other, where the personal becomes no longer private.”

ArtGeo Cultural Complex Curator, Sharon Williams said “We are excited to have an extended body of work on display in the Bond Store. Kirralea’s moody portraits will really engage peoples’ imagination.”

Between Worlds will be exhibited at the Old Courthouse Complex, Queen Street, Busselton between 27 April and 24 May 2022.

Objectives outlined in this statement are aligned with the City of Busselton’s Strategic Community Plan (2021 - 2031) Key Themes Lifestyle: A place that is relaxed, safe and friendly with services and facilities that support our lifestyle.
