Coronavirus (COVID-19) – Facility Closures

Published on Wednesday, 18 March 2020 at 11:36:00 AM

In response to escalating directives around social distancing and indoor gatherings as pre-emptive measures to reduce the spread of the Coronavirus, the City of Busselton has decided to close the Geographe Leisure Centre (GLC) effective 9pm today (18 March 2020).

GLC Memberships will be suspended from 19 March 2020 until such time as the centre can be safely reopened. Families attending swim school will be provided with a credit for future lessons once the risk of Coronavirus infection is over.

Additionally, the ArtGeo Gallery and Court House Complex will be closed from 5pm today (18 March 2020). Consideration regarding our public libraries and the Naturaliste Community Centre is taking place and members of the public will be advised on the status of these facilities as soon as possible.

Youth services and activities have also been cancelled and the Youth and Community Activities Building (YCAB) is closed until further notice. The City will not be taking any further bookings for the use of municipal halls or venues.

The City acknowledges that this is disappointing news, however, the health of the community, City staff and volunteers is priority. The City is working with staff members impacted by these closures so they can continue to contribute to the delivery of City of Busselton services and facilities.

These closures are precautionary measures noting that we are yet to have a confirmed case of the virus in the South West. The situation with the COVID-19 is changing rapidly and the City of Busselton considers these precautionary closures necessary to help kerb the rate of potential infection.

City of Busselton Mayor Grant Henley said: “We are not taking chances with community health or the health of our workforce and volunteers and we will act promptly once information from relevant Government Agencies is received. At this point in time we do not know how long these facilities will remain closed. We hope it will be for a short period only and that they can be reopened soon.

Other changes to the delivery of City services and facilities will likely be made over the coming days and weeks as we seek to ensure essential services like waste management and cleaning are maintained. This situation is unprecedented and it’s important that we work together as a community and do what we can to help each other and contain infection.”

The Objectives outlined in this media release are aligned to Key Goal Area 1 in the City of Busselton’s Strategic Community Plan (Review 2019): Our community is welcoming, friendly and healthy.
