Plan for Plastics: The Single-Use Plastics Ban Western Australia

New State Government regulations ban the sale, supply, and distribution of the following single-use plastics:

  • bowls
  • cups
  • plates
  • cutlery
  • stirrers
  • straws
  • expanded polystyrene food containers
  • thick plastic bags
  • helium balloon releases

Businesses have until 1 July 2022 to exhaust supplies and adapt to the changes.

We can all do our part to lead the way in our community by:

  • keeping the essentials on your person (or at least in your car with your reusable bags!) – i.e. reusable cutlery, straw, cup & food container
  • avoid individually packaged sachets. e.g. coffee, mini soy sauce, individually wrapped sweets or shampoo samples
  • opt for reusable or homemade decorations for your next celebration

Local businesses can also lead by encouraging their customers to BYO food containers and discuss with their suppliers about how to reduce plastic packaging.

More information about the ban and resources go to Western Australia’s Plan for Plastics | Western Australian Government (www.wa.gov.au).
