The City of Busselton council has unanimously voted to join a local government renewable energy agreement which will see all of its large facilities powered from 100% renewables by April 2022.
In 2019, the City previously committed to reducing its per capita greenhouse gas emissions by 50% and to generate 100% of its electricity needs from renewable sources by 2030.
Green power will be delivered through an aggregated electricity agreement brokered by the WA Local Government Association (WALGA), accessing renewable energy locally from wind farms in Albany, Emu Downs and Collgar.
City of Busselton Mayor Grant Henley is proud of the new deal.
“A key action in our City of Busselton Energy Strategy 2019, is to optimise the use of renewable energy. Shifting to 100% green energy is the single biggest step the City can make towards achieving its 2030 emission target,’ Mayor Henley said.
“This is a major step towards achieving the City’s carbon emissions and renewables targets.”
“By working together with other Local Governments across the state, our City will benefit from reduced costs due to the ability to pool our purchasing power,” added Mayor Henley.
Chief Executive Officer Mike Archer said, “We know that reducing our carbon emissions is a vital issue for our community and we’ll do everything we can to drive our emissions down. We’re committed to continue to find new and innovative ways to support positive climate action.”
The project is the first stage of a larger Energy Sustainability and Renewables Project being coordinated through the WA Local Government Association. Future stages will include electric vehicles, energy efficiency and load shifting.
The City has a Sustainability and Energy Working Group, made of Councillors and staff which is always on the lookout for opportunities to reduce the City’s energy costs and carbon emissions.
Objectives outlined in this statement are aligned with Key Goal Area 3 in the City of Busselton’s Strategic Community Plan (Review 2019): Environment that is values, conserved and enjoyed and Key Goal Area 2 Places and Spaces that are vibrant, attractive and affordable.
