The City’s Holiday Homes under Review

Published on Monday, 9 August 2021 at 5:00:00 PM

At its ordinary meeting of Council on 9 June 2021, Council resolved to support some conceptual ‘Opportunities for Change’ to the current holiday home regulatory framework and to consult with landowners, the community and stakeholders about these potential changes.

The ‘Opportunities for Change’ are intended to provide a discussion starting point. All feedback will be carefully considered and, if there is support for change, the feedback will assist in the development of more formal changes to the City’s regulatory framework.

With 969 holiday homes currently registered across the district, City of Busselton Deputy Mayor Kelly Hick advised “There has been a lot of recent discussion around the role of short-stay holiday homes and the City is currently considering a range of options to combat concerns from residents.”

“It is important to ensure feedback from all relevant stakeholders is received, with Council keen to consult the community before any further changes to the regulatory framework is considered.”

If formal changes are developed, the changes will be considered by Council in early 2022. A second round of consultation would then occur, providing further opportunity for landowners, the community, stakeholders and government agencies to comment on any proposed formal changes.

Community and stakeholder engagement is an important part of the holiday home regulatory framework review process and there will be a number of opportunities to attend in person or online information sessions. Would you support the introduction of areas in the Residential zone where new holiday homes may not be permitted? Should the City introduce limits around how many occupants can stay in a holiday home? What requirements and expectations should be placed on holiday home owners and/or managers? The City is keen to hear from you.

Information about the review, including links to book a place at any of the information sessions, may be accessed via ‘Your Say’ on the City of Busselton website. Written submissions regarding the review may be lodged via ‘Your Say Busselton’ from Friday 13 August until the close of business on Tuesday, 28 September 2021.

Objectives outlined in this statement are aligned with the City of Busselton’s Strategic Community Plan (2021 - 2031) Key Themes Lifestyle: A place that is relaxed, safe and friendly with services and facilities that support our lifestyle.
