The City of Busselton and Rio Tinto continue to work together to deliver valuable youth services across the region, celebrating 10 years of running a 12 month youth-focused trainee program.
The City welcomes Sinead Saylor as its tenth new youth development trainee. This important role is funded in partnership with Rio Tinto.
Sinead is a Torres Strait Islander Woman, living and enjoying the Southwest. She is a highly motivated and enthusiastic worker, looking to develop professionally in community support work and youth services. Sinead has volunteered in multiple community organisations and events from agricultural, social, supportive and cultural areas across the community.
Sinead said “I am ecstatic to be awarded the traineeship and believe I can make a positive impact on the lives of those around me.”
“I would like to be a voice and guide for those unable to speak up for themselves. I am looking forward to the opportunity of expanding my skills and knowledge and hope to play a part in shaping a positive environment for myself, other individuals and the community.”
Mayor Grant Henley said “The creation of this strong funding partnership allows our Youth Services team to offer a range of initiatives specifically aimed at connecting and engaging with youth and giving youth a voice.”
“Guiding the youth trainees over the last nine years has been an absolute privilege.” the City’s Youth Development Supervisor, Angela Griffin said.
Angela further adding “Youth have so much to offer the world and helping them to have their experiences, opinions and voices heard by local government is very fulfilling. It’s helped the City shape its services and cater for a variety of events and workshops to suit the needs of youth. Each trainee brings a different skill set and ambition and I’m looking forward to working with Sinead in 2023.”
Rio Tinto Manager of Regional Community Services Justin Francesconi said “The City of Busselton Youth Partnership is delivering excellent outcomes for local young people and we welcome Sinead as the tenth youth development trainee."
“Rio Tinto is committed to creating opportunities for young people as we understand that by supporting young people, we are supporting the whole community. Last year, we doubled our youth partnership funding with the City of Busselton to extend its program to Dunsborough and to support key initiatives around mental health, strengthening the youth voice and providing employment and training pathways.”
Objectives outlined in this statement are aligned with the City of Busselton’s Strategic Community Plan (2021 - 2031) Key Themes, Leadership: A Council that connects with the community and is accountable in its decision making.
