Accessible beaches

The City is widely recognised for its stunning coastline, which serves as a key attraction for both residents and tourists. Despite this, beach and water access is a barrier for many individuals, particularly those with disability.

Accessible Beach Access Matting and Ramps

Beach access matting helps make our beaches more inclusive by providing easier access for people with disability, seniors, and parents with prams.

The City of Busselton has four beach access matting locations.  The matting is installed seasonally, from early November until March or April, depending on weather conditions.

The matting is generally installed to the high tide line (please note, it does not go into the water), to ensure the mat remains safe and secure during tidal changes.

Beach matting is inspected weekly, and maintenance is carried out as needed. The following locations have beach access matting:

  • Busselton Foreshore
  • King Street, Busselton (will not be installed over the summer 2026 period due to coastal groyne installation in the area)
  • Bayview Crescent, Dunsborough
  • Meelup Beach, Meelup Regional Park
  • Mandalay Beach Resort (privately owned and maintained by Mandalay Beach Resort)

Beach Wheelchairs

Going to the beach has always been an important part of Australian culture and identity.

This is particularly true for those who live here in Busselton and for the thousands of people who travel from all over the world to visit our amazing coastline.  This is also true for those living with disability – many having grown up with the beach being a central part of their lives, but after an accident, injury or illness, can no longer pursue this passion as easily.

The City of Busselton want to ensure that everyone can get involved in beach activities and culture, which is why we facilitate the free hire of Beach Wheelchairs (both here in Busselton and in Dunsborough) to ensure access and inclusion for all.

Booking the beach wheelchairs is done through the Busselton Visitor Centre. For more information on our beach wheelchairs and how to book them please visit the Visitor Centre website
