Dive into Science and Pints!

What lives beneath the waves of WA’s Southwest? How do scientists count fish, protect beaches and care for Sea Country? Celebrate National Science Week with a relaxed, family-friendly afternoon of marine science at Shelter Brewing Co on the Busselton Foreshore.

Meet scientists, Traditional Owners, rangers and professionals sharing work from across our region. Talks will be short, easy to understand

Meet the people caring for our coast

Zac Webb from Undalup Association will share Sea Country projects and how cultural knowledge helps care for oceans, beaches, rivers, animals and important places.

Dr Tim Langlois from UWA will introduce fish communities in South West marine parks and show how scientists study them. Jo Browne from DWER will explain how catchments connect the land, rivers and ocean.

A representative from DBCA will speak about caring for Ngari Capes Marine Park. Dr Kirrily Hasting from ECU will introduce the Western Hooded Plover, a small shorebird that nests on local beaches. The Gnaala Karla Booja Impact Rangers will discuss building skills to manage Sea Country.

Dr Renae Hovey and Dr Jane Prince will share their research on the Campanile snail in Ngari Capes Marine Park. Brodee Lowe from Marine Industry Mentoring will explore ocean careers, from science and conservation to boating, diving and technology. More speakers will be announced!

A science event made for families. This is not a long, serious lecture. Children and adults can:

  • Hear short, easy-to-follow talks
  • Ask questions during the panel
  • Join ocean-themed activities
  • Win prizes for young ocean advocates
  • No science experience is needed, and no question is too small or strange.

Bring your family, bring your questions and get ready to dive into science!
