Following advice from RAC WA in April 2025 that it would cease operating its public electric vehicle (EV) chargers at the Busselton and Dunsborough foreshores, the City of Busselton temporarily assumed operation of the Busselton charger while investigating alternative options. While the charger in Dunsborough needed to be removed last year, the Busselton charger was able to be maintained for a 12 month period pending a review.
At its meeting on 15 April 2026, the City of Busselton Council resolved to remove the charger at the Busselton Foreshore and instead enable a focus on private sector provision. This charger is nearing the end of its operational life and has been working at a reduced level of efficiency.
Mayor Phill Cronin said “The early installation of these chargers well over ten years ago was part of an initiative to support EV travel between Perth and Augusta. This played an important role in demonstrating the viability of electric vehicles in the region, and it is clear that over the past decade the EV landscape has evolved significantly. Busselton and surrounding areas have seen steady growth in privately owned and operated charging infrastructure, including a recently installed bank of fast chargers near West Street, Busselton. Additional provision of charging facilities through private investment continues to grow across supermarket car parks and a range of accommodation providers and tourism venues.”
“Removing the Busselton Foreshore charger will also help reduce frustration caused by downtime and limited access during foreshore events, when parking areas are often at their busiest or are temporarily closed” he said.
The City will continue to monitor developments in EV infrastructure and consider ways to support private sector investment that enhances accessibility and convenience for residents and visitors.

The City will formally advertise the decision and install signage ahead of its removal to give notice of the charger being scheduled for removal.
Objectives outlined in this statement are aligned with the City of Busselton’s Council Plan (2024 - 2034) Key Theme Opportunity – We have a vibrant and growing economy with diverse opportunities for everyone to learn, work and flourish.
