Young Readers wrap up summer with Monster Mayhem at City of Busselton Libraries

The City of Busselton Libraries are celebrating the conclusion of the school holidays after almost 400 young readers took part in the annual Summer Reading Quest. Held across Busselton and Dunsborough Libraries, the popular program ran throughout the summer school holidays and featured more than ten activities, a reading log challenge and a finale celebration.

This year’s ‘Monster Mayhem’ theme proved a hit with both new and returning participants. Community Engagement Librarian, Penny Crowley said the program continues to be an important way to encourage a love of reading among children during the holiday break.

“We were thrilled to see so many new faces alongside our regular junior library members,” Mrs Crowley said.

“One standout participant was 12-year-old Daniel Casellas, who logged an impressive 94 hours of reading during the challenge - more than 90 minutes a day.”

Daniel said his motivation was simple. “I just really like reading,” he said.

“I do other stuff too, but I like coming to the library and taking books home. I like reading before I go to bed, reading in the car, on the couch and just everywhere.”

Mrs Crowley said Daniel has been a regular participant in the Summer Reading Quest for at least five years. “He is consistently one of our top readers,” she said.

“We love his commitment.”

Participants have until Saturday, 28 February 2026 to log their reading hours on the Summer Reading Quest website to be eligible for additional prizes as part of the state-wide competition.
