City of Busselton acquires Sues Road site for future outdoor recreation activities

In September 2024 the City acquired 465 hectares of land at Sues Road in Yalyalup for future outdoor recreational activities. This is one of the largest parcels of land within the City of Busselton and is a major strategic land acquisition to provide for the needs of our growing community.

In 2021 the City sold 136 hectares of land in Ambergate to help fund the purchase of the property. This land has been earmarked to potentially accommodate the kinds of sports which have proven hard to locate for several decades, such as pistol and clay target shooting, motorcross and go-karts, cycling and archery and bow sports, and will meet future demands for the City and the South West as a whole.

Mayor Phill Cronin said: “The City is delighted to have been able to secure this large parcel of land to enable growth of these sports in our community. The next steps for us will be to discuss the strategic opportunities and uses with the State Government, undertake conceptual site planning to analyse opportunities and constraints, engage with prospective tenant clubs and form a working group to guide future planning and development activities.”

A lease back arrangement has been negotiated to allow Tronox to continue its mineral sands mining operations on the property for the next few years while the City undertakes site analysis and planning. This lease will allow for a staged handover of rehabilitated mining areas over the coming years, enabling the City to commence development and utilisation of portions of the site prior to Tronox fully exiting their operations.

Objectives outlined in this statement are aligned with the City of Busselton’s Council Plan (2024 - 2034) Key Theme Lifestyle – Our community is safe, welcoming and inclusive, with access to services and facilities to support good health and wellbeing.
