The City of Busselton Libraries have received a $9,900 Community Cohesion Grant through the Australian Library and Information Association, in partnership with the Office for Social Cohesion and supported by the Australian Public Library Alliance.
The funding will support the delivery of a diverse range of programs designed to build, strengthen and protect community cohesion, while helping individuals and communities connect in meaningful and inclusive ways. The Community Cohesion initiative commenced in August 2025 and will run through to April 2026, with some programs continuing later into the year. The grant enables the City’s Libraries to introduce several exciting new initiatives, while also expanding and enhancing popular existing programs, including:
Community Curiosities Exhibition - This exhibition invites residents of all ages to share their passions, hobbies and collections, accompanied by a short personal story. By highlighting the people behind the displays, the exhibition aims to foster understanding, empathy and connection across different backgrounds and life experiences.
Craft-er Dark - A fortnightly, after-hours creative program designed for adults seeking a relaxed and social space to unwind, try something new and meet others. Held in the evenings to better suit younger adults and those working during the day, the focus is on enjoyment, experimentation and conversation rather than creating “perfect” finished pieces.
Living Library - Delivered in partnership with local publishing firm, The Book Incubator, this community engagement program is based on the international Human Library model. Participants share a short account of a significant aspect of their life, followed by audience questions and discussion. The program supports community cohesion by challenging stereotypes, encouraging open conversation, increasing awareness of diverse perspectives, and creating a safe space for respectful dialogue.
Things we don’t talk about (but should) - Presented in partnership with Busselton Hospice Care Inc., this series gently explores topics many people will encounter during their lives but may not often discuss openly, including ageing, care, legacy and end-of-life planning. The sessions aim to provide clear information, encourage conversation and reduce fear or uncertainty in a supportive and welcoming environment, while creating space for thoughtful discussion with trusted local organisations.
Digital Skills for Everyday Life: Connected and Confident - Running later in the year, this four-week, hands-on digital literacy program is designed especially for seniors, while remaining open to anyone who wants to feel more confident using technology in their everyday life.
Mayor Phill Cronin said: “The funding recognises the evolving role libraries play within the community. Our libraries are increasingly becoming a go-to hub for community connection, providing a safe and welcoming place to seek assistance, support and information.”
“This grant enables our Libraries to enhance and expand programs that reach more people across our community in diverse and meaningful ways.”
Information about these programs will be published on the City of Busselton Libraries’ Events Calendar as registrations open.
Objectives outlined in this statement are aligned with the City of Busselton’s Council Plan (2024 - 2034) Key Theme Lifestyle – Our community is safe, welcoming and inclusive, with access to services and facilities to support good health and wellbeing.
