Council commits to exploring Hannay Lane improvements

Published on Monday, 1 July 2024 at 5:00:03 PM

At its June meeting, the Council voted unanimously to explore a range of safety and amenity improvements to Hannay Lane in Dunsborough. This much loved local laneway provides pedestrians and cyclists with access to local retailers, as well as an attractive link to the Djiljit Mia community gathering space, Rivergum Park and an alternative path connection through to old Dunsborough.

The speed limit along the laneway is already 10kph but to further improve safety, Council has made the decision to reaffix the large pot plants to clearly delineate the pathway as a no parking area. In addition, Council decided to investigate options for managing traffic flow and congestion, with a variety of suggestions to be explored over the next 12 months. These include either retaining two-way traffic flow and constructing a kerbed raised footpath or consideration of one way traffic flow with an additional loading zone, with various pavement solutions to be explored in line with this suggestion.

A/Mayor Anne Ryan stated, “Council is keen to explore each of these options to ensure greater safety for pedestrians and cyclists. This will enable an increase in visitation to the shops and cafés with Hannay Lane frontage and encourage people to use the laneway to visit and enjoy the relaxed vibe at the Djiljit Mia community gathering space.”

A/Mayor Anne Ryan further stated, “Council has requested that the CEO explores a number of possible solutions to ensure we get the balance right and these options will be presented to Council within 12 months in time for any approved outcomes to be included as projects in the 2025/26 budget, noting that safety is and must continue to be, our highest priority.”

Objectives outlined in this statement are aligned with the City of Busselton’s Strategic Community Plan (2021 - 2031) Key Themes Lifestyle: A place that is relaxed, safe and friendly with services and facilities that support our lifestyle.
