Val has always made her family her number one priority, especially after becoming a widow at the very young age of 37. It was in 1990, whilst searching for a better lifestyle that she chose beautiful Busselton as the place to raise her family.

Her career included office management roles across various industries, seven years as a community-based kindergarten teacher and 13 years in a number of roles at the then Shire of Busselton, including Cleaning Supervisor, Facilities Officer and Project Coordinator. It was these roles that allowed her to gain a thorough understanding of the operational side of local government and the challenges faced with an ever-growing population with big expectations and the necessity of budget constraints.
