Nominate as a Candidate

How do I nominate as a candidate?

This year the Office of Mayor and five Councillor positions are up for election.

Nomination period for the 2023 local government ordinary election:

  • Opening of Candidate nominations – Thursday 31 August
  • Close of Candidate nominations – Thursday 7 September, 4pm

Any eligible elector in the City (who is 18 years of age or older and who is not disqualified) can nominate as a candidate. Disqualifiers are listed on Western Australian Electoral Commission’s website.

Prior to nominating, it is compulsory to complete an induction course. The induction course has been developed to assist your understanding of what your obligations and commitments will be if you are elected.

Electors who wish to nominate as a candidate must complete a valid nomination application and candidate profile. As this election is being run by the Western Australian Electoral Commission (WAEC), it is recommended candidates use their Nomination Builder to complete nomination forms and construct candidate profiles.

Nominations must then be submitted to the Returning Officer at a pre-arranged appointment by 4pm, Thursday 7 September.

Candidates will also need to pay a nomination deposit of $100 and provide a passport-sized headshot.

All candidates are expected to conduct themselves in accordance with the City’s Code of Conduct for Council Members, Committee Members and Candidates. Candidates and donors must disclose gifts received, made or promised during the disclosure period as outlined below under Electoral gifts.
