As part of the City of Busselton’s Australia Day celebrations, the City hosted its largest Citizenship Ceremony to date and presented the 2026 Community Citizen of the Year Awards. Australia Day is an opportunity for all Australians to come together to reflect, respect and celebrate being part of our nation’s story.
On 26 January 2026, thousands of people across the country became Australian citizens, including 88 new citizens right here in Busselton. This year’s ceremony welcomed people from 21 different countries, marking a significant milestone for the City. New citizens, along with their families, friends and members of the community, enjoyed live performances of iconic Australian songs by the Busselton Brass Band and Voices of the Vasse.
City of Busselton Mayor Phill Cronin said the occasion was a proud and meaningful moment for the community.
“As Mayor, it is a great privilege to welcome our newest citizens and to thank them for choosing Australia and the City of Busselton as their home. Their contributions enrich our community and help shape our shared future.”
Following the Citizenship Ceremony, the Community Citizen of the Year Awards were presented, recognising individuals and groups who exemplify the values of service, care and connection within the community.
Mayor Cronin congratulated both nominees and recipients, presenting certificates and medals to this year’s award winners:
- Heather Hunt – Community Citizen of the Year
- Mia Anderson – Young Community Citizen of the Year
- Graeme Durward – Senior Community Citizen of the Year
- Dunsborough Volunteer Bushfire Brigade – Active Citizenship Award (Group)
Mayor Cronin said: “Congratulations to all nominees and to the 2026 award recipients. I would also like to sincerely thank everyone involved in making the City’s Australia Day celebrations so special.”
“The Busselton Brass Band and Voices of the Vasse set the tone for a wonderful celebration through music, while the Rotary Club of Busselton–Geographe Bay served their famous Aussie breakfast and provided entertainment throughout the morning. The Dunsborough Progress Association also acknowledged and honoured the local community through its Naturaliste Gratitude Awards. The day provided an opportunity to reflect on what unites us as a nation—our diversity, our resilience and our shared responsibility to one another.”
Objectives outlined in this statement are aligned with the City of Busselton’s Council Plan (2024 - 2034) Key Theme Lifestyle – Our community is safe, welcoming and inclusive, with access to services and facilities to support good health and wellbeing.
