The dedication, courage and community spirit of the City of Busselton’s Volunteer Bush Fire Brigade members were celebrated on Friday evening at the Emergency Services Volunteer Awards, hosted by the Yallingup Rural Bush Fire Brigade.

City of Busselton Mayor Phill Cronin was joined by Federal Member for Forrest Ben Small MP, Member for Vasse Libby Mettam MLA, Department of Fire and Emergency Services personnel and volunteers from brigades across the district who gathered to recognise years of outstanding service protecting our community. National Medals and Clasps ranging from 15 years through to 60 years were presented to members in recognition of their long and diligent service in times of emergency.

A highlight of the evening was the recognition of two extraordinary volunteers who each reached the remarkable milestone of 60 years of service.

Ken Sue of the Ambergate Volunteer Bush Fire Brigade was honoured for six decades of unwavering dedication, having supported the brigade through generations of change while helping shape and strengthen its operations over many years.

Wally Lord OAM of the Acton Park Volunteer Bush Fire Brigade was also recognised for 60 years of volunteer service. Beginning his journey in 1964 with the North and South Acton Park Bush Fire Brigades, Mr Lord has served in numerous roles including firefighter, captain, secretary, equipment officer and training officer. Demonstrating an extraordinary level of personal commitment, the Acton Park Brigade is located on Mr Lord’s property, a reflection of his lifelong dedication to supporting volunteer firefighting in the area. His contribution has left a lasting impact not only on his brigade, but on the broader Busselton community.

Mayor Cronin congratulated all those receiving medals and praised the efforts of all emergency services volunteers, acknowledging the important role played by the City’s 367 firefighting volunteers serving across 13 brigades.

“The commitment shown by our local volunteers is nothing short of extraordinary. Volunteer members give their time, energy and skills to protect lives, property and the environment, often in incredibly challenging conditions. Their service is a testament to the strength and generosity of our community.”

“The decades of service provided by Ken and Wally in particular reflect a lifetime of commitment to the community, and I sincerely thank them both for everything they have given in that time. In addition, I recognise and thank those volunteers who have also given many, many years of service, including some who have now reached a 50 year anniversary. It is an incredible privilege to be able to celebrate their achievements with them.”

“To all our local brigade members, and to their partners and families who support them behind the scenes, I cannot express my gratitude enough. Congratulations and thank you to all the award recipients and everyone who attended the evening.”

The recognition event served as a powerful reminder of the vital role volunteer firefighters play in keeping the City’s community safe and the deep respect and appreciation held for them across the region.

Objectives outlined in this statement are aligned with the City of Busselton’s Council Plan (2024 - 2034) Key Theme Lifestyle – Our community is safe, welcoming and inclusive, with access to services and facilities to support good health and wellbeing.
