From potential to pathways: Meet the City’s 2026 Youth Trainee

Published on Wednesday, 25 March 2026 at 10:53:00 AM

Congratulations to Finn Batley, the City of Busselton’s newly appointed 2026 Youth Trainee, selected through the ongoing partnership between the City’s Youth Services team and Rio Tinto.

The Youth Traineeship program is designed to give young people genuine opportunities to build skills, gain confidence and see a future for themselves right here in their own community. Alongside a full year of hands-on work experience, the program offers a strong support network, mentorship and clear pathways into further work, learning and long-term career development.

As a Dunsborough local, Finn brings focus, grit and a strong sense of community to the role. A former St Mary MacKillop College student, she earned her black belt in Hapkido by the age of 15, a powerful reflection of her resilience, leadership and commitment to personal growth.

City of Busselton Mayor Phill Cronin said “Investing in young people is essential, particularly in an increasingly complex and challenging world. Supporting young people to build confidence, capability and real-world experience is important.”

“Finn’s appointment reflects the incredible potential and talent of our local youth, and I am pleased the City can support her journey.”

Rio Tinto Iron Ore General Manager Communities Molly Singline said: "For more than a decade, the City of Busselton and Rio Tinto have worked in partnership to support opportunities for local young people in the community.

“We congratulate Finn on her appointment and look forward to seeing her thrive under the excellent mentorship of the City’s Youth Services Team.”

Finn will work alongside the City’s Youth Services team to support programs, events and initiatives that connect with and engage young people across Busselton and Dunsborough. With her background in martial arts and strong community ties, she will be a positive role model for local young people. The City of Busselton and Rio Tinto look forward to another year of collaboration, continuing their shared commitment to backing young people and helping the next generation thrive.

Objectives outlined in this statement are aligned with the City of Busselton’s Council Plan (2024 - 2034) Key Theme Lifestyle – Our community is safe, welcoming and inclusive, with access to services and facilities to support good health and wellbeing.
